TRIP INFORMATION

Most trekkers are content to have a good view of Everest from Kalapatthar or Gokyo Ri or to visit Everest Base Camp. However, most mountaineers dream of reaching the summit of Everest in their lifetime. The South Col route remains the most popular choice among mountaineers, as it is the most assured means of reaching the top. Time spent over 8000m. is less on this approach, as the summit is attempted in one push. Furthermore, the south route has a good success rate, because of the easy access, once it is opened by the first summiteers of the season.

Follow the popular Everest trail to the Base Camp. A short walk along the moraine leads to the first obstacle- the icefall with its deep crevasses. Each year, experienced Sherpas fix this section with ropes and ladders so that climbers can reach Camp 1. It is a gradual climb to Camp 2 near the top of the Western Cwm. From here, climbing on mixed snow and ice leads up the Lhotse Face to Camp 3. From the Camp 3, strenuous climbing on moderate mixed snow and rock leads to the South Col. and Camp 4. The climb becomes steeper after ascending snow slopes to reach the crest of the South East Ridge. After a brief respite of easy climbing, it is a steep ascent on the way to the South Summit. A short traverse and then climbing on steep rock and snow grooves of the notorious Hillary Step leads to the final easy ridge to the summit.
