TRIP INFORMATION

Makalu is the world’s fifth highest mountain and is located just 14 miles east of Mount Everest. Though the peak appears isolated, its size alone is impressive. It’s perfect pyramid shape with four sharp ridges, makes this mountain all the more spectacular.

Makalu was first mapped and photographed from the Tibet side by a British Everest expedition in 1921. Although the peak had been studied by several Everest parties, the first successful climb was not made until after the conquest of Everest. Makalu is considered a technically difficult mountain to climb, as only five of the first sixteen attempts were successful. Makalu West Face offers challenging climbing with a hanging icefall, a 50 to 60 degree ice - rock wall and a 70 to 75 degrees rock pillar near the summit. Normally, four camps are set up in the approach, excluding Advance Base Camp at 5,300m. Follow the lateral moraine, hike onto the glacier and set up the camp I on a glacial plateau at 6,150m.Cross the glacier plateau towards Makalu La, climb steep slopes and set up Camp II at the base of the Makalu La (7,000m). Climb the Messner Headwall towards the North West Ridge and the site of Camp III at 7,300m. Camp IV will be set up on the North Ridge at 7,850m. From here make the final push to the summit ridge (8,462m).
